The Social Psychology of Organization
This book had its origin in the program of research on human relt tions in organizations launched by Rensis Likert in 1947 as one of the major programs of the Survey Research Center of The University of Michigan From its inception, this series of researches has been con cerned with problems of morale and motivation, productivity and ef fectiveness, power and control, and leadership and change processes in large scale organizations The research findings from the program and related work in the Institute for Social Research were well sum marized several years ago by Rensis Likert, whose original work on organizational problems and whose contagious enthusiasm for research have been extremely helpful to us This book is in part an effort to provide a more general theoretical treatment of some of the same issues which he considered in New Patterns of Management (1961), and we have drawn on some of the same materials and experience
